Who needs to be on it

  • Whenever a player gets called up, he must be added to the 40-man roster, if he's not on it already. If an organization's 40-man roster is at capacity, then someone would have to be removed, exposing that player to waivers.

  • A player who is 18 or younger when he is signed to his first pro contract can spend five seasons in the Minors before he has to be protected on the 40-man roster or the team risks losing him the the Rule 5 Draft.

Anyone who is 19 or older when signed to his first pro contract must be protected after four years. Again, if he is not put on the 40-man roster, he is eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft, held each year in December.

The time clock for a player starts when he signs rather than in the season he starts play.
